The construction of the Bushehr atomic power plant with Russia’s assistance in Iran is entering its final phase. August 20-22 the fuel will be delivered to the reactor segment of the plant. This means that construction and testing of all systems have been accomplished. Thus the Bushehr power plant will be effectively started up followed by power launch and putting in operation.
The Bushehr power plant project is unique in terms of insuring strict compliance of the nuclear non-proliferation regime. During the whole period of its operation the fuel for the plant will be provided by Russia on the terms of its future return, while the whole process of plant maintenance, as well as fuel supply and its return will be under full control of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It will eliminate the possibility of any manipulations with spent nuclear fuel.
By many estimates, including one of IAEA, the Bushehr power plant project is a bright example of how Iran could benefit from cooperation with the international community if Tehran would take concrete actions for ensuring entirely peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
